Fans have been begging for it ever since the “Buffaslug” debuted in 2006—some long before that. “Give us back the royal blue!” That was the chant for so many years. And in 2020, the Buffalo Sabres will finally see clearly enough to acquiesce.
In one exciting tweet, the Buffalo Sabres made two announcements today. First, the new 50th anniversary third jersey for 2019-20 will be unveiled Friday at 10 AM ET. Second, they confirmed royal blue is returning for 2020-21.
Some of the wind was taken out of the sails of the anniversary jersey by last month’s leak. In today’s tweet, the Sabres confirmed they’re “going gold” for the 50-year uniform. We can see that represented in the leaked image.
The thing I’m looking forward to is seeing the details all under proper lighting conditions, which we’ll almost certainly get tomorrow. The low quality of the leaked photo can’t possibly do the jersey proper justice.
As far as the news of the return of royal blue, some fans have questioned whether this merely means a throwback third jersey in 2020 or full-time use of the retro colors. Though the tweet isn’t specific, a source has told me the plan is for the team to go to royal blue full-time in 2020-21 with new home and road sweaters. That being the case, I don’t expect to see the team employ a third jersey that season, but it’s too soon to know for sure at this point.
For now, check back tomorrow morning for a full look at the Sabres’ 50th anniversary third jersey!
