This may be our best look yet at the new home jersey of the Ottawa Senators—thanks to an overeager retailer in Ontario.

On Sunday evening, a Reddit user named u/anothercanuck19 posted this photo beneath a caption reading: “These were just put out in the Kemptville Canadian Tire. Fanatics brand.”

The image appears to show the forthcoming black sweater, yet to be officially announced by the team. It aligns with previous reports and leaks.

Eight weeks ago, The Athletic reported the Sens will be returning their original look for 2020-21. A few days after that, a leak on the NHL’s own online shop revealed an updated version of the team’s old logo.

The fact that physical jerseys are already showing up in stores suggests that a reveal could be imminent—if not before the Stanley Cup is awarded, then perhaps shortly thereafter.

In other words, I think it an official announcement may come within the next 30 days.

So let’s dig into what we’re seeing here. First, it’s clearly not a game sweater; the collar shape and crest size are instant indicators of that.

Those features suggest this is a Fanatics women’s fashion jersey, which tend to have wider collars and tapered waistlines. But they do generally match the overall design elements of the game sweater.

In case you haven’t seen them side by side, here’s how the men’s and women’s Fanatics replicas typically compare.

The Breakaway replica jersey line from Fanatics includes men’s (left) and women’s cuts. The designs match the official game sweaters, with a few minor variations—the collar on the women’s edition, in particular.

Apart from the collar, and sometimes the crest size, the proportions generally tend to be in alignment. I mention that because one element of the Senators’ sweater strikes me as strange, given the report from The Athletic.

In it, Hailey Salvian wrote: “The home jersey mockup is black with two red bands on the arms, encasing the numbers, and a single red stripe around the bottom.”

It wouldn’t be out of place to have the numbers “encased” between the red stripes on the sleeves; that’s how it worked in 1992. However, the jersey pictured above shows the stripes very low on the sleeves. Too low for NHL regulations. They’d be at or below the elbow. At least that’s how it looks to my eye.

Now, I say that knowing full well this is a fashion jersey that approximates a game sweater. But as I mentioned before, the proportions are usually accurate.

The Senators original secondary logo appears to also be returning in 2020.

There was one part of Salvian’s July story that I didn’t mention in my previous post. She wrote: “All of the jerseys will be worn with black pants, which were depicted with the Senators’ alternate ‘S’ logo from the 1990s on the right leg.”

It’s an interesting uniform detail, but what she didn’t mention is that it also appears to be returning to both shoulders of the jersey as well. At least that’s what the leaked photo is showing us. So as new information goes, there is that.

So based on this leak and other information in The Athletic report, here’s my mockup of what I think we’ll be seeing from the Senators later this year.

I took some liberties with the white jersey. I have no idea if the dual stripe across the waist is accurate, but it looked weird to have a single red or white stripe down there. And this is how it looked on the original white jersey. I also reversed the collar colors without any direct evidence of that. Again, it was just more aesthetically pleasing.

For those interested in number and nameplate designs, I’m not yet sure whether the Sens will use their current font, introduced in 2017, or their original one from 1992. But that one was pretty generic and teams are generally moving toward custom designs they can trademark.

And that’s all I’ve got on this subject for now. My thanks to u/anothercanuck19 for sharing his find with the world. While we wait for official word, what are your thoughts on what we’ve seen so far?
